For a dancing bear, every day is agony.

Dear WSPA supporter,

The first time I saw the video of dancing bears in India, I was shocked. Thin, dusty bears, with ropes threaded through their sensitive noses. Just the look in their eyes was enough to convey their agony.

And yet, tourists give money to watch these bears! How could someone possibly think that this pathetic sight is entertaining?  I know that when you see this heartbreaking video, you won't find anything remotely entertaining about it. I know that like me, you'll have the urge to help these animals, in any way that you can.

Dancing bears are taken from the wild as cubs, when they are still small enough to be controlled. Their teeth are filed, leaving the animals completely defenseless and at the mercy of their captors.

A rope is later threaded through the bears' noses, usually without anesthetic. The rope is used to control the bears, and the constant tugging creates painful, open wounds and infections.

Kalandar gypsies have used dancing bears for decades to entertain tourists on the street. Once they are fully dominated, the bears are conditioned to "dance" on hot plates when music is played. Eventually, they begin their sad, dance-like shuffle whenever they hear the music.

These bears also suffer from severe malnutrition and abuse, often leading to physical and behavioral problems including blindness and pacing movements characteristic of mental damage.

Your donation can bring an end to this suffering, forever.

With your support, WSPA can eliminate the tradition of dancing bears in India. We are working in partnership with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to build a sanctuary for rescued bears and to train Kalandar gypsies in alternative livelihoods.

We estimate that there are approximately 400 dancing bears left in India that need our help. These poor creatures have so much to recover from…but at WSPA, we are committed to making sure that they get the care they need.

Please, give what you can today. Your gift will be put to work immediately to help bears in India and other animals around the world.  On behalf of the animals, thank you.

Sincerely,

Allan E. Kornberg, M.D.
